The context

Care is changing.

Care has traditionally been built around the family. For generations, this worked because care was embedded in the household.

A son takes his father to the doctor.

Karuna professional helping an elderly woman finish her meal

A daughter checks whether her father has eaten.

Someone accompanies them to the temple.

Someone stays home when they are not comfortable being alone.

But the need for care has not disappeared. The structure around it has changed.

The question

We started with a simple question.

What does an ageing loved one actually need from their family — and which of those needs can be supported professionally?

Ageing is not a single medical condition. It is a gradual change across several dimensions of everyday life.

MobilityIndependenceRoutinesSocial participationManaging everyday activities

These are small interventions, but they can have a meaningful effect on everyday independence.

Some needs are clinical, and belong to doctors and nurses. Many others are not. A loved one may simply need someone —

To accompany them to an appointment.

To make sure they eat.

To help them move safely.

Or to spend an afternoon with them.

The gap

This is the gap we are building for.

Karuna operates in the space between family and clinical care — a professional layer of non-clinical support for everyday ageing.

01

Family

Presence, judgement, decisions and affection. The centre of care, and not something to be replaced.

Layer one
02

Professional support

Trained, non-clinical help with daily activities, movement, meals, company and appointments.

03

Clinical care

Diagnosis, prescription, procedures and nursing — the work of qualified healthcare professionals.

Layer three

We are not trying to replace family, and we are not trying to become a medical provider. We are building a professional layer of non-clinical support for everyday ageing — available when family members cannot physically be there.
